Super Bowl Movie Trailers

I didn't watch the Super Bowl this year, just like I didn't watch it last year, the year before that, or the year before that. I don't even watch it for the commercials, which is an activity I've never really understood because the commercials aren't all that different, better, or more exciting. After the game, they usually go into regular rotation anyway, so it's not like that's the only way to see them even if they are outstanding.

However, the movie trailers are usually worth checking out, if only because they often are the first time you really get a good look at some of the more exciting movies coming out later this year or the next.

Let's take a look at some of the more interesting film trailers that aired during last Sunday's big game:

Captain America: The First Avenger

This looks pretty cool. I'm excited for it. Captain America is one of the three or four best comic book heroes ever, and this looks like it'll be a pretty cool movie. I like Chris Evans, and director Joe Johnson certainly did an amazing job with the Rocketeer. However, that costume really looks lame now that I see it in motion.

But... I'll see it, probably on opening weekend. It looks cool.

Thor

Totally... bad... ass. I think this looks incredible. This spot didn't show us anything we hadn't already seen in the previous trailers, but that's ok because it still looks dope.

Fast Five

I can't believe they're still making Fast and the Furious. I can't believe I'm still excited! This looks like every other movie in the series, but if there's actually a fight scene between Vin Diesel and The Rock, I might just crap my pants in the theater. I'm not ashamed to admit I'll see this, though it'll probably be on Blu Ray.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Why not? This is the kind of movie that if a friend wants to see it and invites me to come along, I won't say no, but I doubt I'd actively see it on my own. It looks neat, and I'm sure it will be a lot of fun, but the last couple Pirates movies were kind of lame. Still, the appearance by Ian McShane as the villain has me intrigued, and the lack of Orlando Bloom is certainly a big plus.

We'll see.

Cowboys & Aliens

At the risk of alienating myself from the rest of the geek community, I have no real interest in this movie. Cool cast and a fun concept not withstanding, it just doesn't look that good in my opinion. Still, if it debuts to rave reviews and stellar word of mouth, I might check it out.

Looks to me like renter.

Super 8

I freakin' hate trailers like this. Why even show anything if you're not going to show anything? Still, J.J. Abrams's name on a project usually means it's going to be notable, but it doesn't mean it's always going to be good. This looks... neat. That's about the best anybody could say about a trailer that is intentionally left vague, mysterious, and pointless. I'll keep an eye on it.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

I don't give a shit.

Cool. I'm glad you did this, because I didn't even think to check for these movie trailers, and I probably would have been too lazy, anyway.

Captain America: In fairness, you only see the Captain America costume for about half a second at a time in that trailer. Still... Anyway, I'll see it.

Thor: It's awesome how much that actor looks like Thor from The Ultimates. I'm looking forward to this one a little bit more than Captain America, to be honest.

Fast Five: I stopped watching at number 2, but hell--I'm a guy, and that trailer looks neat.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The last one in the series was all but unwatchable. It was just loud and chaotic. But we'll see.

Cowboys & Aliens: Harrison Ford, huh? I don't know. Maybe.

Super 8: Yeah...what's it about? I'm with you. If this is coming out in 2012, then okay. If it's coming out this summer, then I need more.

Transformers 3: Didn't see the last one. Won't see this one. I kind of liked the first, actually, but these films play to Michael Bay's penchant for excess.
